Tribute to Andrew John, former Farm Manager and Overbury resident

Andrew, or AJ as he was commonly known, grew up in Court Farm House, Beckford, and returned to Overbury as Farm Manager in 1981. He died in January this year. Penelope recalls fond memories of a village stalwart.

"Andrew was Farm Manager when I took over as sole trader of what was then Overbury Farms. Without him I wouldn't have had the guts to continue running it as an independent farm. He gave me videos made by the eminent Professor Malcolm Stansfield MBE so I could learn about farming and I also had the pleasure of meeting him.

"AJ was a very strong willed man and also hugely loyal and kind. Every Monday morning we would drive round the farm and catch up with everything going on.

"He had many hobbies, including his microlight. Some years ago, before fast wifi connections, he took a passenger from Wales for a flight. Unfortunately, the field he was using for take off wasn't quite long enough and he didn't make the take off and crashed into the fence at the end of the field. I was away at the time and on a very expensive dial-up internet connection. Andrew blocked my email connection sending photos of the crashed microlight!

"From his work as chairman of the village hall and the Overbury Street Market, to his hard work keeping the churchyard tidy, he was a fundamental building block of the village. We all knew AJ was The Boss. I love this photograph of him directing traffic at the street market wearing his hi-viz. He will be sorely missed."
